Finca La Virgen: Organic pineapple & climate challenges

We recently visited Finca La Virgen, our organic pineapple producer in Costa Rica. This progressive grower combines sustainable agriculture with biodiversity, essential for a healthy and resilient crop.

Finca La Virgen covers 1,200 hectares, including 700 hectares of organic pineapple and 500 hectares of native forest. This forest promotes biodiversity and helps maintain the natural balance on the plantation.

An advantage of this region is that irrigation is not needed; natural rainfall provides the pineapple plants with sufficient water. At the same time, climate change is causing increasing rainfall, bringing new challenges. An advanced drainage system is essential to prevent waterlogging and keep the soil structure healthy.

Organic pineapple cultivation is all about balance: fertile soils without synthetic pesticides, natural pest control and an ecosystem in which insects, birds and micro-organisms play a crucial role. This promotes not only the quality of pineapples but also the resilience of the environment.

Our organic pineapple is available year-round, so you can always count on a sustainably grown, high-quality product. By working with growers like Finca La Virgen, we continue to build a more sustainable food system, despite unpredictable weather conditions.

Curious about our organic pineapple and the impact of climate change on cultivation? We would love to tell you more!
